  • Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum

Dedicated to the first president of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the memorial complex was built in 1992 and is situated on the site of the former British colonial polo grounds in Accra. Covering 5 acres, the mausoleum was designed by a Ghanaian architect, Don Arthur, and serves as the final resting place of Ghana’s first president and prominent Pan-Africanist, along with his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.

This is the spot where Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence. On the premises, there is a museum displaying objects from various stages of his life. The mausoleum is designed to resemble an upside-down sword, which in Akan culture symbolizes peace. It is clad in Italian marble from top to bottom, with a black star at its apex, symbolizing unity. The structure is surrounded by water, representing life.

The museum hosts rare artifacts related to Ghana’s independence, and tours of the park offer visitors an in-depth history of the struggle for independence in sub-Saharan Africa.
